Default Shovelhead Wheel/Speedo Question

My new to me 1980 FXS needs a new speedometer cable. It wasn't working when I bought it. The cable was broken. I found the speedo drive on the front wheel but it's on the right side of the bike.

My service manual shows it is supposed to be on the left.

Ive been told that this won't work on the right side because there's a tab on the drive and a notch in the rim that won't align? But I don't really understand. Can some one help explain this? Will this work? Is the wheel on backwards? I have a new speedo drive on order but now unsure where it goes.

Thanks
Steve

I'm thinking this may be the wrong place for this question. So I put it in the Shovelhead group.

i will have to look to see where the speedo is on the 80fx.
the drive has a flat metal tang that makes a 90* bend the falls into a drilled hole in the hub. on my 74ch, the drive is on the right (brake side) and i can not remember the 74fx i had to say if they are indeed diff. i will have to look into my library to see. if there was a swap, need to determine if the ratio is compatible with speedo. i used to get a speedo chain repair kit from auto stores and make my own but since electric arrived, might not be around. (yep, called a chain and not a cable)

a quick look at one(google image) shows the drive on the brake side, there should be a fender loop that the cable goes through. they do have a left side drive but not for the fxs, i think flct or something, you may have mixed wheel components. how about a jpeg of the machine.
oops, is it as the avatar?? if so, do not think it is a fxs as it would be more on the narrow front end like the superglide. if it has a fat front, then it could be left or clutch side. i do have a fx parts break down 1971>84.

I'm going through speedometer issues right now with my 77 Super Glide, it was upgraded with FLH speedometer and tanks excetera. The speedometer is a 2 to 1 ratio but my drive is a one to one so I have to get a new Drive off of FXR 80-84. It is a left hand drive unit. The part number is 67127-84a. The only thing you'll be able to find is an aftermarket unit but will match the OEM.
