2006 Softail Std 200 tire to smaller
I have a 2006 H-D Softail Standard (EFI) with the 200 Rear tire and solid rim (factory I think).
I want to switch to a narrower rim / tire. What all is needed? I have the skinny belt. Is there a specific spacer kit to use with the narrower rim? Factory or aftermarket available? Recommendations please. |
200 sounds very wide for a stock tyre of that era. Stock rim diameter is 17" and a 200 tyre to fit that is likely to need a 6" or wider rim. Your owners manual will tell you what size the stock tyre is. If you don't have one you should be able to download one from the H-D website, via the Owners tab.
Once we know exactly what you've got we can be more helpful. It may also be worth posting in the Softail section, where you will find fellow Standard owners. |
That's exactly what came on his 2006 FXST...a 200 on a 17x6" Rim.
I think that's when they started making the the wider Softail hubs. So you'll probably need a pulley spacer and some custom wheel spacers (at least the Left Side) to use the narrower hub and rim width 17x4.5" or 16x3" wheels from the other models Unless you're looking for 16x3 laced spoke...they made those for the later softails in a Wide-Hub . |
That 16x3 laced wheel "Wide Hub" would be the ticket!
The dealership said a lot of folks switched from lace to solid because of the bigger engines loosening the spokes too much. I am north of 60 and not ripping the road like I used too. It would probably do me fine. I spun off many a riveted on sprocket on my '67 XLCH back in that era. I never had trouble with laced wheels on my various Shovels through the years. I really wish I still had a Shovel! My bike came with 200 55 17 from the factory. I am not sure if the solid rim is original is all. |
Only 60? You are but young! Your bike when new, according to the internet, very neat:

Well this is what the old Flame looks like nowadays; I think a bit better than from the factory. |
