Default pulley bolts

Need to know. I have a 04 fatboy. Took off my rear sprocket pulley. To change my tire (needed the space for leverage). I was told the bolts for the sprocket are a use only once. Stress to yield. The question is what makes them so special. Can I go to the hardware store and get them and use lock tite. Or do they have be the 94773-00a oem bolts? I don't want to die if I get the wrong stuff. I live about 3 hours from any real store. What would ya do.

You can use Grade 5 or better bolts from the hardware store. Just get good quality bolts, if you can.

They are grade 8 bolts, I'd certainly be using them more than once. They only torque at 23 ft lbs.

I could depend on the bike, but I don't see it. I just completed a pulley cover job on my 18 Softail. Alot of bad stuff can happen if these bolts fail. I bought a manual because of it. My torque was 100lbs. No ****. Also said red loctite, but I used blue.
BY ALL MEANS USE NEW BOLTS! Why skimp on somfin like that. PEACE OF MIND!

mr. chopper makes a very valid point.
if you stress to yield, the aluminum hub would fail.
unless it is a critical fastener, most books will say three times is a charm, but at 23#/ft, you will never stress a grade 8 bolt. it is not so much tensile strength as it is a shear strength, aka, the reason they are thread locked so they do not work loose and get hammered.
red locker is an over-kill, only makes getting them out harder and raises the possibility of ruining the threading.

I'm just sayin' 23ft#s is NOT tight enuff. IMO. If they came loose, I'd like to think you would notice/feel something before alot of bad stuff could happen. Think about it, belt, rim, swingarm. Get bolts, whatever you decide to do, ( in my case I got new bolts. They we're chome, so they went with the new cover nicely) then use a drop of good, and tighten them suckers. Star pattern, like a car tire. Good luck , be safe.

By the way, I even reach down and see if a washer spins if I think about it when cleaning. Lol.

C'mon ... 23# Rear Sprocket/Pulley 7/16" bolt Torque? ... That torque won't work, but could be used for the Front Disc 5/16" bolts, but that's it

That's what I call Anti-help ...

In regards to whether to use Bolts more one time ... the answer depends on who is asking the question

.

The OP asked about 94773-00a, The installation instructions on HD's website says 23#'s then add 1/8 turn. Bolts sure don't look to me to be 7/16" but pictures can be deceiving.

I've been around a few wheels and pulleys

Yes, the Rear Sprocket/Pulley bolts are 7/16"

Here's a little something to look over ... only Touring Front Stuff which is just a portion of the wheels i have (btw, 5/16" on those)

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/wheel...nt-wheels.html

Edit to Add...
Below from 2005 Softail Factory Service manual ... My 2003 Softail FSM lists it slightly higher at 55-65

I see now where those Chrome Bolts instruct to torque to 23# then 45° (1/8 turn), but we don't know what that final torque comes to, but definitely it would be over 23#. I would look into it further if I was going to use those.

I think the OP just wants some STD Bolts ... why would someone ask Re-use stock?, get Hardware Bolts? ... then Jump to Chrome??? ... doesn't make sense

Part# 3737A ($2.37 List) ___ SCREW 7/16-14 X 2-1/4 HEX HEAD, WITH LOCKPATCH (GRADE 5)
