Default Time for new tires?

So I just got back on my XLN which I've ridden only a handful of times since getting it, & happened to get caught in some light rain tonight. Now, when riding in clear dry conditions it seemed to grip the road just fine. However, on slightly wet asphalt the bike began to lose grip & sliding side to side (mostly at the back wheel) as I applied the brakes, even with gentle pressure. The tire tread still seems deep enough, there is some minor tire cracking, & I'm not exactly sure how old the tires are. Does this sound like it may need new tires, or is this just how the bike is & I should adjust my braking technique?

That's the thing.... They don't look dry rotted. Not fresh, but not rotted. The sidewalls seem totally fine.

EDIT: The DOT # is (0513), time for em to go?

Thumbs up

My experience of stock Harley tyres is that grip even when new is not good. Most tyre brands recommend replacing when seven years old, so the time to replace them is near! In addition, your rear tyre has told you it doesn't like the roads when they are wet, so thank it for it's service and retire it with full honours! I suggest you fit a different brand, my own preference being Avon.

I had just ordered a new set of tires, balling on a budget so wound up getting a set of Kenda K673.
I had Shinko's on my VN750 & those held amazing in the rain, so let's see how these guys handle...

Update: Got caught in the rain almost immediately after mounting these things; the K673's seem to hold pretty well, & hold the ground well in general. I'll update later if they degrade horrendously quick.
