2020 Electra Glide Standard Is the Perfect Blank Canvas

Most stock Harleys are nothing more than a blank canvas for mods, and the Electra Glide Standard does a great job of that.

Blank Canvas

In reality, virtually no one rides a stock Harley. The bikes that H-D sells are nothing more than blank canvases for what typically becomes comprehensive builds with scores of aftermarket parts. Sure, some models are now sold as "factory customs," but most still prefer to do the work themselves. And for those folks, the latest Electra Glide Standard provides the perfect blank canvas for customization.

Starting Point

At its core, the Electra Glide Standard is a stripped-down machine packing the excellent Milwaukee-Eight 107 powerplant in a Touring chassis with a batwing fairing. And it starts out at under $19,000, which is a few grand less than the nicely-dressed Street Glide. Add it all up, and that makes it an ideal starting point for a custom build.

Comfy Ride

The Standard does lack a lot of the fancy touring-oriented electronics that other models have, but those things are arguably unnecessary for tooling around town in style. And it does that quite nicely, soaking up bumps and potholes thanks to its beefy 17-inch front tire.

Satisfying Experience

The Electra Glide Standard provides a satisfying riding experience, with comfortably placed controls, seating position, and bars. And with a prodigious 111 pound-feet of torque available at just 3,250 rpm, getting up to speed is certainly no problem for the big cruiser, either.

Stop and Go

The gearing in the six-speed transmission is well-suited for the M8 powerplant, and the bike has great brakes, too, which is always a good thing on a two-wheeler that tips the scales at 820 pounds. Standard ABS ensures that even if the road conditions are less than ideal, you can still comfortably come to a stop with no drama.

Nothing Fancy

Despite its girth, the Electra Glide Standard is still quite agile and actually proves to be quite fun on the backroads and twisties. At the same time, it's no stripper bike, providing plenty of storage space and a multi-purpose LCD screen, though you won't find some fancy infotainment system here.

Solid Choice

For those looking for a simple bike (available only in black) that provides a great riding experience and few frills, the Electra Glide Standard is certainly a great choice. Especially if you plan on modifying the heck out of it since that $3k you'll save will go a long way toward purchasing some aftermarket goodies.
