This custom street may be a thing of beauty, but make no mistake, it was built for the track.

See See Motorcycles

This beautiful, almost road legal, Harley-Davidson Street 750 flat tracker comes to us courtesy of Thor Drake. Thor works out of See See Motorcycles, in Portland, Oregan. Unlike many Harley-Davidson faithful, Thor actually really likes the XG750 or 'Street 750' as it's known. According to him, "Buried underneath a bunch of government-mandated features, frumpy parts, and plastic farkles is a pretty great motorcycle". As was mentioned, this flat tracker is almost street legal, as Thor put some LED lights on it with the thought it may someday be a road bike. Obviously, as a flat track racer, the bike has no front brakes, so Thor will want to see to that before putting it on the road.

Street 750

Aimed at new riders, the Street 750 was built to a budget and, as such, its performance isn't anything to write home about, nor are its looks. So, somewhat understandably, Street 750 has caught a lot of flack from more experienced Harley-Davidson fans. For bike builders, however, the Street's simple design makes it a dream to work on. The motor comes out with the removal of six bolts and unplugging of six electrical connectors and, according to Thor, "The stock engine is just fine... The motor itself is based on the Harley firing pattern we all know and love."

Harley Stage 1

So, after taking the stock engine out, Thor set about working on it. Speaking on the engine, Thor said, "There's enough power to cruise at 90+ mph. So we bolted on a high flow air cleaner, and built a state-of-the-art-exhaust system that uncorks a few extra horses." But the upgrades didn't stop there, improvements were made to the fuel delivery and ignition mapping by giving the ECU the Harley Stage 1 flash.

Working Within Limits

Thor built this bike to compete in the Super Hooligan class, which meant he had to work within certain parameters. Since the rake and trail couldn't be changed, Thor enlisted the help of Sandy Kosman and built some adjustable triples. According to Thor, "This alone pulled the front forks back by a lot. The stock triples are very close together, stopping a proper flat track tire fitting without rubbing". Thor didn't think much of the standard forks, speaking on them he said, "We replaced them with mid-90s Yamaha YZF-R6 forks, a flat track standard." The rear shocks were also taken off, in favor of Fox Racing adjustable 13" shocks.

Finishing Touches

While there are limitations on what can be done to the frame, a lot can still be done to make bikes more competitive in the Super Hooligan class. Since there aren't any restrictions on modifying swingarms, See See modified the Street's swingarm to take a 19" rim and tire. All the braking is taken care of by the rear, free-hanging Brembo on a cast iron rotor. Speaking about the rotor, Thor says, "It rusts if you let it, but it has the best memory in red-hot conditions. So when you are trailing it in the corner, it won't wrap and rub." Thor ran into some difficulty when it came to the chain conversion but figured it out in the end, using a 520 chain so he could fit Barnes-style quick change sprockets. Although this Street 750 is a thing of beauty, it was ultimately designed for the track. In fact, it has already competed in several Super Hooligan races and won the majority of them.
