1. Route 66, Arizona

Okay, let's get the obvious one out of the way first. Route 66, which runs through Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, and Illinois, is, arguably, the most famous road in the world. It was one of the first highways ever built in the U.S. and takes about five or six days to complete. It may seem like a long trip but there are countless attractions that will keep you entertained along the way. It's a bucket list trip, so get it ticked off early.

2. Overseas Highway, Florida Keys

This is one of the more surreal trips on this list. The ride from mainland Florida down to the most southerly point in the U.S, Key West, is 113 miles long. What makes it so surreal? How about the fact that you'll ride over 42 bridges along the way, making it feel like you're riding on the ocean for most of the trip.

3. 17-Mile Drive, California

This is a short trip but packs some of the best, maybe even the best, views of anywhere on this list. Of course, I'm referring to the spin down the coastal roads of the Pacific Coast Highway. This road winds from Pacific Grove to Carmel and has some of the best ocean views in the world. It may only be 17 miles long, but there's nothing to stop you turning around and doing it again, and again.

4. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

This is a road built specifically for sightseers. Take this trip along the Columbia River Highway and you'll be riding along a piece of history. It was the first scenic highway in the U.S. to be designated as a national historic landmark. The best time to go is in spring, as the wildflowers are aplenty and the waterfalls are at their fullest.

5. Scenic Highway 30A, Florida

And we're back in Florida. This is a ride for the beach lovers amongst us, as it takes in the beautiful Gulf Coast beaches. The 28.5-Mile stretch on the Scenic Highway 30A is jam-packed with sights like seaside cottages, state parks, and nature preserves. You may also encounter a palm tree or two.

6. Bluebonnet Trail, Texas

If you decide to take this trip in spring, be prepared for a color explosion. There are bluebonnets in Texas Hill County as far as the eye can see. For many people, the best way to experience the bluebonnets is to start in Austin, Texas, and take the U.S. 290 west to Johnson City's Wildflower Loop. After that, take the U.S. 281 north to Burnet, Texas's official bluebonnet capital.

7. Sonoma Valley, California

California makes the list for the second time, and it's no surprise considering there are so many fantastic roads there. Anyone who considers themselves a wine lover should take this trip. There are hundreds of wineries spread across this three-county trip. Of course, we advise sensibility and that you book a place to stay if you decide to sample what's on offer. Check out the movie "Sideways" for an idea of what this trip has in store.

8. Road to Hana, Hawaii

If you ever needed an excuse to go to Hawaii, this is it. This is definitely one of the more active rides on the list. There are 620 curves and 59 bridges packed into the 52-mile Road to Hana on Maui. Don't fill up before setting off, as the road is dotted with tons of places to sample the local seafood along the way.

9. Outer Banks Highway, North Carolina

If there has ever been a road trip meant for the summertime, this is it. Ride along the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway with the Atlantic ocean on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. This trip is packed full of beaches, dunes, wildlife, and lighthouses. So, don't forget your camera.
