Dream Bike

We've all got our own personal idea of what constitutes a dream bike. For HD Forums member SimonR, it was an Evo Road King. But after months of searching, he just kept coming up empty. That is until he discovered a 6,000-mile one-owner Harley that had been sitting in storage for 12 years. Following such a triumphant score, the OP deserved to brag a little bit and did just that by sharing his new ride with us right here in the forums.

Elbow Grease

As you might imagine, the Harley needed a good bit of work after sitting for over a decade. Beginning with lots of elbow grease. "Two of us spent six hours cleaning and I still haven't tackled the wheels," the OP said. "I managed to remove some bling, and a big thanks to marktruckee for the original points cover and backing plate."

Little Help from My Friends

With just a little work, this classic Harley was already living up to the OP's lofty expectations. "I managed a couple of shortish rides and I LOVE IT. It feels different from the Springer Classic I had which was FI. I've got a replacement seat coming and no doubt will have lots of questions as I get to know the bike. But a big thanks to the members on here for their help so far."

Future Plans

After basking in the glow of his fellow member's compliments, the OP reveals his plans for the Evo. "I suspect the alloy rims on the wheels are going to need some cleaning up. The black spoke parts look great though. Seat and bars are really all I want to change. I'll keep the originals together with the factory screen."

"I'm going to pop it back to the garage to have them just double check the front brakes. It is probably me, but I can't help thinking they are pulsing slightly, as if when applied they grip then grip less. It's had new disks, etc., so it's probably nothing but I want the peace of mind."

Minor Mistakes

Even the cold weather couldn't calm the OP's enthusiasm. Nor could some minor issues! "Great ride out - if a little chilly. My newly acquired derby cover was leaking, so I got a new gasket and looked up the torque setting, which was 50-70 pounds for the screws. Well, that didn't go well! Two screws sheared and the DK Custom shiny cover cracked. Yep, there is a difference between inch pounds and foot pounds!"

Shine 'Er Up

The OP finally stopped riding his Harley long enough to clean up the wheels and tires, which made a big difference. "I used wet and dry paper first then moved on to Sovol Autosol and wire wool," he explained. "If I wanted it even shinier, I suspect I'd have to use another finer grade wire wool before cloths to polish."

Cheaper Options

With a new cover installed, it was time to tackle another big issue on this bike on a budget. "In the UK, getting the True Track stabilizer can be a little pricey. I came upon a brand new boxed Smooth Rider kit in the UK at a price that couldn't be missed, so I bought it. Had a chance to fit it today and I'll reserve judgment till I can get out and put some miles on the bike, but first impressions are mixed."

Comfy Upgrade

Next, the OP scored a seat from an '04 Road King to up the comfort level of his ride. And as of now, that's where this rescue project stands, but you can bet that there's plenty of good stuff yet to come. So be sure and head over here to keep up with future progress!
