1. Who Knew!

Ok, so many people are probably very aware that there is a very prominent Harley-Davidson presence in Europe. This, however, might not be the case for many riders who may be looking to expand their touring horizons. So, in a perfect world where we can just "get-up-and-go", where can Harley-Davidson riders find that open road in Europe? The short answer? Everywhere! - Starting in England, for example, Harley-Davidson riders can enjoy weekly biker gatherings near the London Eye, that enormous Ferris wheel that provides astonishing views of London. For those of us who need to be economically-savvy, there is a rather large number of homes that will rent a room to travelers (through Airbnb.com, for example) providing a much better deal and local experience than a hotel. The Harley-Davidson dealership in London and others in England provide excellent destinations for visiting riders as most of these are located in either historic or tourist-oriented areas.

2. Onward to France

You rode past the gates of Buckingham Palace, rolled over the cobblestone streets of London, and journeyed through the English countryside, now what? Head to the port of Dover and board the Ferry- bike and all. As of the summer of 2016, a ride for you and your bike across the English Channel will set you back about $60 bucks. You ride onto the large ferry, the crew will strap your bike in and you go topside to enjoy the almost two-hour ride across to Calais, France. Once across the channel, set your bike's GPS for "avoid highways" (unless you are in a hurry) and enjoy the scenic French countryside. Fair to note, gas prices will cause severe culture shock as they will also do in England. Stay outside big cities in either hostels or Airbnb places for the night. Ride around the cities (French traffic is horrible) and go through for the obligatory pictures at the Eiffel Tower, the Arc De Triomphe, etc. Ride out of the city before late afternoon.

3. Oktoberfest!

If in October and you're on your way through Germany you can't skip out on Oktoberfest. Munich is the most popular place but the less-crowded Stuttgart Oktoberfest celebration is the real ticket. Lots of bikers and biker events. Make sure, however, to go online six months in advance (yes, six months!) and reserve a spot at a Beer tent! you'd be surprised how hard it is to get a beer at Oktoberfest. If you don't go through Germany during this time, no worries, nearly every major highway in Germany will take you through castles and breathtaking scenery. Garmisch in the Bavaria region is a must ride any time of year (check for snow).

4. Switzerland & Austria

Gorgeous scenery every way you look and just about any road you take. If you ride through Switzerland the Alps are something you really must experience. The Swiss also put together a rather impressive bike week every year in July. In September, it is Austria that host one of the biggest bike weeks around. Faak Am See, Austria (yes, that is the name of the town) comes alive every year to host the event. tripadvisor.com has a ton of information on places to stay, what to do etc. If you already went to Sturgis and Daytona, this is where you probably want to go next.

5. For The Pilgrim In You

Every year, and sometimes several times per year, the Vatican hosts a massive "Blessing of The Bikes". For some, this is a big milestone in life, for others, a Vatican party! Still, this is an impressive event heavily favored by Harley-Davidson enthusiasts but you will share parking space with the Dual Sport-types. With the ruins of ancient Rome right next door and a relatively easy ride to the Chianti region (if you are into wine) Italy is a fantastic destination for riders with a very large Harley-Davidson following. Check the Vatican, the Rome, and the Chianti HOG chapters, their websites do a great job providing event information. You can also email the HOG chapters directly and many times they are very, very happy to take in touring riders.

6. All Across Europe

Unless you are trying to get into Russia, riding through Europe (providing all your immigration and bike documents are in order) is a breeze. Borders are open, people are friendly and just about any road outside big cities is beautiful. Motorcycling, as a sport and as a form of transportation is not only accepted but respected. From England to Poland and everywhere in between, if you use common sense, are respectful, do a little research, and have plenty of time, Europe should be on your bucket list as a must-ride. If your time is limited consider renting a motorcycle through one of the many European Harley-Davidson dealerships. It won't be cheap, but it is worth it. Call AAA and get yourself an international drivers license (is fairly easy). Search "ADAC Europe" online and purchase a policy with the European equivalent to AAA - and there! you are on your way to an unforgettable adventure.
