Harley-Davidson Built by a Watch Maker has Hefty Price Tag

Wacky Watchmakers

'Blue Edition' is so extravagant that it makes Orange County Choppers' wacky designs seem sane. Ringing in at $1.88 million Swiss Franks ($1.88 million USD), Blue Edition is also likely the world's most expensive theme-bike build. In collaboration with Swiss Harley-Davidson dealership Bündnerbike, the build took a team of watchmakers and fabricators over 2500 hours to complete.

Bling Barge

Far from a daily rider, the over-the-top build is a marketing tool for the Bucherer Blue Edition watches. Some of the more crazy features include inlaid diamonds, gold-plated hardware, and a fancy watch and ring integrated into the gas tank. For context, Carl F. Bucherer is one of the oldest luxury Swiss watchmakers, dating back to 1888, and still family-owned.

Inner Beauty

Oddball touches are found on and even 'in' the Twin Cam engine. Bucherer claims that Blue Edition is the “world’s first motorcycle to feature a motor that is lit up from the inside.” To get a glimpse of the internal illumination, the air cleaner, transmission, and camshaft housing have cut-out windows. The excessively short dump pipes appear to have been welded from watch-strap widths of stainless tubing.

Deep Blue

The intense blue paint was applied using a 'secret method.' Revealing part of the process, Bündnerbike builders explained that they first silverplated the tins, wheels, and frame, and then applied six coats of color to achieve the finish. Below the grammatically incorrect Harley-Davidson script is the logo for the series of high end watches in the 'blue' collection.

Watch Dome

Naturally, the build centerpiece is a Bucherer watch. A company executive claims that “Never before has a manufacturer's watch been built into a motorcycle.” While probably true, the watch housing is also next-level. The backlit housing is set on a rotating ring under an armored glass dome. While a watch is useful, it should be noted that all newer Harley-Davidsons come with a stock digital clock!

Vibrating Ring

The Blue Edition also comes with a diamond ring under its own protective dome. According to Bucherer, the ring named the 'Dizzler,' “is a “six-prong Heaven solitaire ring with a 5.40-carat diamond.” Discussing the rotating action of the housing, the watchmakers said they used an “elaborate holder made from silicone rings...to ensure the engine vibrations did not damage the mechanical movement.”

Secret Grip

Goldplating covers Blue Edition's hand and foot controls. Capping off the bar ends and triple tree clamps are diamond rings. Jurg Ludwig Jr. of Bündnerbike stated that mounting the rings was a “technical challenge,” and yet another secret process was employed. Ludwig explained, “To ensure that the rings really stay in place, a special method was applied that guarantees a very strong hold.”

Road Design

There is no arguing that Blue Edition is extravagant with questionable design. Yet, it is important to consider that Bucherer specifically chose a premium motorcycle to showcase their luxury watches. For those who think that Blue Edition is an aberration, just remember that trapped beneath all that blue and bling is a mangled Softail Slim that will never experience the open road — now that is the real affront.
