Images from the 9th Annual Born Free Motorcycle Show
Do you share a love of old custom motorcycles? Then plan on being in Southern California next year in late June. Until then, let this short gallery of amazing pictures from the 2017 show at Oak Canyon Ranch whet your appetite.
Sensory Overload!
If you have never been to one of the BIG motorcycle shows, you just can't imagine how impressive some of the builds are. Just some of the bikes ridden to the Born Free show blow away winners at most chopper shows in small town America. This Twin Flathead powered custom Harley was by one of the invited builders, and built for the show, but can't even catch the eye of these show goers. After a few hours wandering around (and you really can spend all day,) it is hard to be impressed.
Raffle Bikes
Every year at Born Free they have a raffle where you can win a motorcycle. More specifically, Born Free raffles off several nicely preserved/restored, rideable, vintage or modern bikes. Buy the special ticket and you get a poster, admission, and a chance to win one of the bikes. Can't get to the show? This year the top raffle bike (a running but patinated Panhead) included shipping to anywhere in the USA, so it is worth the price ($25).
Ain't No Sissy
What can we say about this Panhead custom? That sissy bar is an amazing piece of metal work, and sure to strike fear into anyone riding behind you. This is an example of the type of bike that gets ridden to the show.
Very Old School
Typically about a dozen invited builders are featured at the show, and their bikes are always spectacular. This very old school tank shifted Flathead racer was built for the show and raced at the Costa Mesa Speedway flat track event earlier in the week. Nothing like head to head dirt track racing on your high dollar show bike to get the blood pumping.
Extreme Choppers
Reality TV nearly killed the chopper, with their tarted up circus wagon theme bikes. Here at Born Free they still embrace the old school look and style of the chopper, Long bike and Bobber, but have taken things to the extreme. The paint and metal worn on these bikes will hurt your eyes in the bright sun, almost as much as riding one of these more than a few miles would hurt your back.
Smooth Operator
This Panhead is certainly a smooth custom bike. There is not a single extraneous detail on it. It is hard to imagine how it would ride with a hard tail and solid front fork, but the rake is enough that there is probably a good bit of flex there.
The Future
The bike to the left, with the spun aluminum disc wheels, looks like the future that never was. Looking ahead to 2018, you can expect the 10th annual Born Free show to take place the 4th weekend in June once again. You can also expect it to be bigger and even better. There is a whole bike week beginning to grow around this, with parties and races leading up to the weekend show, and after parties as well.
