Old School Style

There’s something really cool about rolling down the street wearing a pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt, nothing to keep the dust out of your eyes except a pair of sunglasses. The lines of your bike as slick and smooth as the pomade styled in your hair. Some call it lowbrow style but we know it's old school attitude with a retro flair.  Whether its 1950s style Bobbers and pinup girls or '70s themed Choppers candy coated in metal flake with a SoCal twist, Kustom Kulture is on the scene.

Republic of Texas

Last month the Republic of Texas Biker Rally (ROT Rally) hosted the Kustom Kulture – Artisan Bike Show. Deemed as a showcase of design, engineering, and creativity, the show featured custom bike builders, painters, fabricators, seat makers and various other craftsmen and innovators bringing out the old school with a new school twist.  Born out of the styles of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth and the infamous Ratfink, Von Dutch and a cast and crew of hot rod builders, artists, car clubs, post-war bikers, and American counter culture. Kustom Kulture has evolved into a sexy circus of bobbers, choppers, custom cars, leather jackets, and pin-up models with big hair and high heels sinking into hot asphalt.

Custom Paint

Whether it’s candy apple red, root beer brown, lollipop purple or sour apple green, metal flake paint jobs are popular choices for retro choppers.  Reminiscent of the 1960s and 70s, glittery paint jobs that were once considered a thing of the past are reemerging in popularity in Kustom Kulture bike builds. Matte colors, pinstriping, and Ratfink designs are also popular with bike builders and painters.

Kustom Kulture on the rise

The Republic of Texas Biker Rally isn’t the only event celebrating Kustom Kulture and motorcycling. Kustom Kulture shows are popping up all over the United States in cities like Austin, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and practically everywhere else where there’s enough enthusiasm for retro-cool to gather a crowd.  The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend is a huge event hosted in Sin City every April. Among the many retro-inspired themes of the event is a car show that allows pre-1963 stock motorcycles to be entered into the competition.

Americana isn’t just for Americans

Kustom Kulture is spreading around the world with hot rods and grease-slicked hair growing in popularity around the globe.  Retro-themed car and motorcycle clubs are popping up all over Europe and can be found as far away as Japan.  German Harley dealership and fabrication shop, Thunderbike HD Niederrhein has its own American themed bar and restaurant, appropriately dubbed "Thunderbike Roadhouse."  Thunderbike Roadhouse regularly hosts Kustom Kulture bike shows and events.  Kustom Kulture forever is a large festival celebrated in Herten, Germany and the Kustom Kulture Show is an event that takes place annually in Helsinki, Finland.  So, whether you’re in Austin, Las Vegas or near the Rhine River Valley, if you have a love of old school style and motorcycles you’re sure to find like-minded company starting up their engines and putting on leather.
