Land Speed Racer Uses Trio of Harley Engines to Reach Maximum Velocity

The Triple Lindy might look like some kind of crazy science experiment gone wrong, but it's actually one heck of a fast bike.

1. Triple Harley Punch

It isn't every day that you see a motorcycle with two engines, let alone three. So when we ran across this insane, triple-engine Harley Hummer land-speed racer in a recent Hot Bike feature, we were obviously intrigued. Unsurprisingly, the unique ride was built by an equally unique individual known as Cabana Dan Rognsvoog. The veteran builder is well-known within the custom motorcycle world for his amazing creations. But this one might be his craziest yet.

2. Big Screen Inspiration

The inspiration for a bike this insane has to come from somewhere. And in this case, Cabana Dan credits the Rodney Dangerfield flick Back to School for giving him the notion to build a three-engined racer. As he tells it, the idea for the name and the bike itself came from one particular scene.

"The scene opens as Thornton Melon climbs the ladder at the swimming pool. He bypasses two lower diving boards and gets to the top diving board. He pauses for a moment. He makes a couple armpit farts. He jumps off the diving board and does back flips, front flips, and uses every board on his way to the swimming pool below. He hits the water with a tremendous splash. Thus, the “Triple Lindy Dive” was born. Thornton wins the competition, passes the semester, and dates the teacher."

3. Good Things Come in Threes

The three Hummer engines that power Cabana Dan's ride are sequentially dated 1948, 1949, and 1950 lumps, each one displacing 125cc. All of the vintage engines feature heavily modified heads, velocity stacks, and a host of other modifications designed to make the elongated beauty go seriously fast in a straight line. Shifts are handled by a (single) 5-speed transmission.

4. Stretched out Beauty Queen

The Triple Lindy looks every bit as good as it goes, too. The obviously modified frame and body feature a hot Pearl White and Mercury Red paint job by Blue Moon Kustoms, which is highlighted by hand-painted pinstripes laid down by Calico Joe himself. Rounding out the package are a set of Arlen Ness grips and custom Cabana Dan crafted pegs.

5. Future Plans

The Triple Lindy is a fresh build, currently making its rounds on the show circuit. So despite a bunch of inquiries, Cabana Dan doesn't yet know what the triple threat is capable of. But the wild man fully intends to take his stretched masterpiece to the Bonneville Salt Flats soon to see what she can do. You can bet we'll be keeping an eye out for that, even though it won't be too hard to spot.
