Legally Speaking

There's no denying that flat track/dirt bikes are incredibly cool. But there's just one problem plaguing them that's quite common with any racing machine - they typically aren't road legal. That applies to Harley's XR750 flat tracker, a bike that's never been legal for use on public roads. But that little fact didn't stop a gent named Brad Peterson from transforming this particular bike, recently featured in Bike EXIF, into something he could ride on the streets - legally, that is.

Race Power

Make no mistake, however - this is no clone or other model gussied up to look like an XR750 - it's the real deal. Even the motor was ripped straight from motorsport, having powered Rich King's 2007 racer.

Read Deal

So how the heck did Petersen manage to get his hands on a real-deal flat track mill? Apparently, it wasn't that hard to do. “The motors are sold without a title,” he explained to Bike EXIF. “But they do have serial numbers. My motor was confirmed as a Rich King motor via the H-D race department records.”

Solid Parts

The parts list for this build certainly reads like a race bike, with goodies like twin Sudco Mikuni TM 38 flat slides, Darcy racing intakes, a Bill Werner Racing exhaust with SuperTrapp mufflers, and a wet clutch.

Sprung Right

All of that goodness was then transplanted into a C&J frame that's been oiled up to prevent rust. Suspension parts are equally impressive, consisting of modified CBR600 forks, nitrided tubes, A&A variable offset triple clamps, and a Penske rear shock.

Fly by Wire

You'll probably notice that the Vortex J-Murph bars sit a little higher than your typical flat track bars, but that's by design and geared toward street use. Unfortunately, Petersen still won't be able to tell how fast he's going because there's no speedometer or tach on this bike.

Quick Stopper

In case he gets going a little too fast, Petersen doesn't lack for stopping power, however. A Brembo master cylinder, coupled with massive 320mm front and 10.5" rear iron brake rotors, ensure this thing can stop on a dime.

Keep It Light

Even though it's been adapted for the street, there are plenty of race-inspired goodies on this Harley. Look no further than the lightweight 19" Performance Machine forged wheels for proof of that.

Barely Legal

The lightweight theme continues with full carbon fiber bodywork, which Petersen wisely left unpainted. With a Corbin seat and Discreet LED lighting, this thing looks every bit as good as it goes. And, more importantly, it also makes this XR750 road legal - barely. “It’s titled and legitimately street legal,” Petersen said. “Which is not an easy thing to accomplish in my state. But it may be pushing some details into gray areas…”
