Have You Spotted One?

As Harley enthusiasts, we are often scouring the web for any information on new and upcoming Harley-Davidson models before they hit the showroom floors. Design info, performance specs, and spy photos make for great reading and help build excitement for the future. That said, it's easy to get caught up in Harley-Davidson motorcycles and forget about how the brand branches out and partners up with other companies to produce unique products. It was not until I passed a Harley-Davidson Special Edition International Truck on the freeway a few weeks ago that I wondered how many folks have actually heard of this giant Harley-International collaboration that was released a few years back?

A Noteworthy Collaboration

The International Lonestar class 8 truck was introduced for the 2009 model year and incorporated features of a classic conventional cab truck combined with some dramatic modern styling touches. As far as heavy-duty trucks are concerned, the Lonestar still stands out as a unique truck on the road today. It is likely that the combination of its traditional elements mixed with modern technologies is what attracted Harley-Davidson (who takes a very similar approach to building motorcycles) to partner with International Navistar to create a Special-Edition Harley-themed truck.

It All About That H-D Look

As if the standard Lonestar model truck was not already unique enough, the Harley-Davidson Edition takes things up a notch to allow owners to cruise in comfort and style. The truck uses a classic Harley-Davidson paint scheme with its gloss black paint and contrasting silver and orange stripes down the side of the cab. Instead of using the standard Lonestar grille, the H-D Edition used a chrome horizontal slat grille with Harley-Davidson hood logos to give it a look similar to that of the old-school International D-series trucks of the 1930's. The headlights are genuine Harley items pulled directly from the Harley parts catalog with only minor internal modifications made in order to meet federal safety standards. The chrome bumper with integrated fog and marker lights, 7" slash cut exhaust stacks, battery/storage boxes with Harley logos, and custom forged 24.5" wheels with bar & shield center caps are few of the exterior features that set this truck apart from the rest.

Lavish Living Quarters

The H-D theme continues inside of the cab with a smattering of Harley-inspired components. The first thing one will notice when stepping into the cab is the black perforated leather seats with black stitching and Harley logos in the headrests. The instrument cluster is a neat feature with its hooded aluminum-faced gauges that scream H-D V-Rod styling. The H-D Edition also includes a slick shifter lever with a leather boot, chrome trim ring, perforated leather shift knob, and a limited-edition plate with the owner's name and truck serial number on it. The cab interior is adorned with quality materials in the living quarters that can be found in the rosewood cabinets and flooring as well as the massive couch that converts into a 42" wide bed when needed.

An Instant Classic

All said and done, only 250 Special-Edition Harley-Davidson Lonestar trucks were built by International for the 2009 model year. All 250 units were available only in the sleeper cab configuration a seen in the photo above. While it is a luxury vehicle in its own right, these trucks were still built to work as is evident by their 550 horsepower, 15 liter Cummins diesel engine and 18-speed Eaton transmission. The trucks had a starting MSRP of $155,000, with some sources claiming an additional 42 options being available to allow each owner to spec-out the truck exactly the way he or she wanted it. In any case, this Harley-enhanced International truck is a rare bird indeed, so be sure to get a good look if you spot one out on the road!
