1. Where Is Best?

There is no doubt that every single state has its benefits and drawbacks when it comes to motorcycle riders. Some states, however, are better than others for what they can offer an enthusiast in terms of riding experience and sometimes financial incentive. A good rule of thumb is to look at insurance rates by different carriers in different places. States where insurance is lower (depending on your particular situation) usually indicates a good state to own a motorcycle (generally).

2. Colorado

Needless to say that Colorado offers some of the best, and sometimes most technical, riding around. A ride up the mountain passes towards Vail or cruising through Roosevelt National Forest there is no denying that this state should be on your "must-ride-through" list. Traffic congestion is fairly low, and insurance is very affordable if you haven't been racking up points on your license. Sport riders might see a bit higher premiums.

3. South Dakota

If you are about to retire and you are not too rooted in a particular state, South Dakota might be what you are looking for. Cost of living is lower and, of course, retirement money goes a lot further. Housing costs and insurance premiums are some reasons to consider this state if you are planning to move. This state also plays host to the famed Sturgis rally which brings in an annual migration of over 500,000 riders.

4. Idaho

While Idaho offers beautiful roads to travel through it is its geographical location that makes it a fantastic place to live in for motorcycle owners. Yellowstone Park, Lake Tahoe, Cannon Beach, and Arches National Park are fairly equally distanced at about 8 hours from Boise. Fairly low cost of living, decent insurance rates, and low population density also add to the beauty of this state for riders of all types.

5. California

Like in any state, you should really avoid the major cities. Los Angeles, in particular, is far from an ideal place to ride a motorcycle. Great weather and fantastic riding along the Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite National Park, Death Valley, or the San Bernardino mountains make California a very popular place for motorcycle riders. If you live in the right places insurance can be fairly priced or it can be monumentally highly prohibiting for some riders. So research on locality might be warranted if you are thinking of moving there. Still, California is one of the best palaces to own a motorcycle mainly because of the weather and the varied riding experiences it offers.

6. Kansas

Okay, so Kansas is typically not a "riding destination" but it has much to offer to a motorcycle rider. Income is high compared to general spending, housing prices, etc - so more money for that new exhaust system! - The state enjoys a fairly low crime rate and population density which translates into a lower cost of living and lower insurance premiums.
