What's Behind Harley-Davidson Recalling 57,000 Touring Bikes (photos)
Harley-Davidson has issued a recall for over 57,000 motorcycles worldwide, and all because of an incorrectly fitted clamp. Here's what you need to know, and which bikes it effects.
Why the Recall?
Harley-Davidson motorcycles announced a voluntary recall of bikes from their touring lineup, built between July 2016 through early May 2017. The problem involves a clamp on the oil line which was evidently improperly fitted or tightened. Unfortunately, the assembly line inattention has resulted in at least two riders going down when oil leaked in front of their rear wheels.
How Many Bikes Are Affected?
The total number of machines that were cited for voluntary recall is 57,138 bikes, 46,000 of which were sold in the United States. The remaining bikes were sold all over the motorcycling world - even in India. All owners of the touring lines are asked to go to your local dealer and the mechanics will inspect the lines and repair them free of cost.
What Bikes Are Affected?
The motorcycles affected include these from the 2107 model year:
• Road King
• Road Glide
• Street Glide
• Road King Special
• Road Glide Special
• Street Glide Special
• Electra Glide Ultra Classic
• Road King Classic
Also included are the Police issue Electra Glides and Road Kings.
Other Recent Recalls
A couple of other Harley-Davidson recalls in recent times include: 30,000 bikes in early 2016, for potential clutch problems. And about 60,000 bikes back in 2014, for potential braking issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reportedly still investing the braking issues.
What to do if Your Bike is Affected
Harley spokesman have said that owners of these bikes: "...are urged to see their dealers immediately and schedule appointments to have the questionable clamps inspected." If your bike is affected, take it in to your local authorized service department and have the technician examine it and effect repairs, if needed. Without the recall even, if you see oil leaking out of your bike, that is cause for alarm and you should find and fix the problem before it causes and accident, or wrecks the motor.
