I'm not too crazy about the harley emblem on my Street Bob gas tank. I assume the emblem is glued on. Is there anything that can be done short of a new paint job? If it would pop off clean, I'd replace it with a decal. I'm assuming, though, that if I pried it off, some paint would come with it.
I didn't care for the stock emblems either. The first thing I did when I got the bike home was to remove them and replace with the '63-65 style emblems.
The original emblems are a bit easier to remove if yousoak the adhesive backing with some mineral spirits or some 3M adhesive remover for a few minutes, before heating with a hair dryer.
The same process works wellfor removal of the side reflectors, too.
I just took a long piece of monofiliment fishing line (8 lb. test) wrapped it around my finger on each hand like a gaint piece of dental floss and slowly drew it long the tank under the 3-M tape in a sawing motion and they came right off. Then a little detailer adn wax and good as new.
I started this thread, and feel a lot like MetallicaMatt. I've seen emblems and decals on the J&P catalog. Looks like they have ones that SurfGuitar used. I like those a lot, but would like to see what some other people have done as well. I also would appreciate if someone would let me know whether the emblems like you buy from J&P will go on pretty much any large tank. I assume they flex a bit.
I gotthe new tank emblemsfrom my H-D dealer...there are several different early style emblem versions from the 40's into the 70's (they are in the Touring section of the big parts catalog). Mostare available withadhesive backing plate mounts, and the emblems attach to the plates with tiny little screws. Mine were about $42 including the mounts.
