98 FXD gas gauge help please
My gauge works fine, but the plastic cover is so hazed and crazed I can barely see through it. I have the gauge unplugged from the sending unit, but I can't seem to get the black cover off on top of the gauge so I can get the plastic window out and replace it. Manual is no help. Anyone know how to get the plastic window out, or is this a replace the whole gauge deal?

Mine was looking pretty crappy too. Under the heading of "nothing to lose", I took some real fine grit wet / dry and had at it. It was very fine stuff, I can't remember which it was but it may have been 2000 grit. It helped, but not perfect. I've noticed that when it's wet, it looks pretty clear. I was thinking of painting it wish some sort of clear coat sort of stuff. Something water based so it doesn't melt the plastic.
That plastic window was never meant to be replaced. I'm pretty sure the bezel or ring around the gauge has been rolled / crimped in such a way that removal would pretty much bugger it up for good.

The white bottle 2 stage plastic polish stuff, sold about everywhere since time began, is good for things like this. My stepson's headlights were glazed like that and I gave him some to polish them out. They looked great afterwards. He works for a NASA contractor with the space suits and he said that's the same stuff they polish the face masks with.

Thanks for the replies guys. I started to try and gently pry the bezel off with a screw driver, but it starting making a terrible potato chip breaking noise and right there I knew it was a press fit and there was no way I was getting it off without destroying it. I have a glass cutter friend that was going to make me a glass cover to replace the plastic with. Bummer because he could have etched a design in it for me.
I used a polish to clean up my car headlights similar to what you are talking about Dr. Hess. It did wonders. I'll give it a try on the gauge and see what happens.
