Default Gas Gauge

I have a SG and my gas gauge is not working properly! When I fill it the gauge reads full but once I use a bout 1\4 tank it starts to jumping back and forth low to full! Is there a simple fix or should I just get a new gauge?

thanks for the help!

The sensor/float in the tank is probably going bad. I don't know if it's repairable but it's certainly replaceable. Check the factory service manual for instructions for your paticular bike. Or maybe post up year/model/etc and maybe someone can give better details.

Mine did the same thing, it was the gauge. When the key is turned on the gauge should rise slow to the correct level, not jump.

Gave up on the possibility of an accurate fuel gauge long ago

Fill your tank. Reset trip odometer to zero. Fill up based on your average fuel mileage.

That's the way I do it. The gauge has been useless on both of the HD's I have owned. I reset the trip odometer each time I fill up and know I can run around 200 miles before I need gas.

The issue the OP described happened to me. When I would switch on the gauge would jump to full then as the level went down would bounce around. I replaced the gauge and now it rises slowly as described above and works fine.
