Cool Gas Gauge Issues

I have a 2009 EGC with 26,000 + miles and a couple of weeks ago i filled up my tank before a ride, after leaving and heading out I noticed my gauge moving around. I ignored it for a while but the more i rode and burned fuel it got worse, it will register full and then move back and forth to empty. I have drained the tank and checked all the electrical connections and blew out the vents. Anyone know what is wrong or have seen this before?

Sometimes the float/sensing unit just goes bad.

Only thing to do is replace it...

Mine does the same thing, the mechanic at Harley said it is probably the gauge. He said there is a resistor of some type in the gauge that slow the reading down so you dont see the flux during normal ops. I still havent changed my gauge but I hope when i get around to it, thats all it is.

Thanks for the info, I haven't had the time to take my bike to the shop lately, but hoping to do so in the next few weeks. Any idea what the cost is of the replacement?

It could actually be the gauge itself or the wires connected to it may be loose. Does the needle jump around when the bike is idling. If so take a voltmeter to the wires on the gauge and see if the voltmeter jumps around. If the voltage to the gauge is steady it probably is the sending unit. If the gauge only jumps around when you are moving I would be more inclined to believe it was loose connection. If you have to change out the sending the unit consider changing out the return line in the tank at the same time. The fuel lines in the tank have a habit of chafing over time.
