How do you think the Polk mm6501 compares to some of the higher end coaxial like hertz Milles in sound quality? I've heard components have a fuller sound but curious how far up the ladder you have to climb to see a difference.

I was trying to keep EricJ in budget and the component Polks are a great budget setup.
SQ wise the the Hertz coaxial speakers will be superior to the Polk components. But then you're looking at close to 250-300 a set. High end components can get pretty expensive. The Focal 165 KRX2's are $700 bucks at Crutchfield and you will pay over a grand for the Hertz MLK 1650.3's.

To answer your question. You're gonna have to climb pretty far up the ladder. lol

Gan is right on the money there. When budget dictates sometimes you must sacrifice sound quality. I am not sure how much the polks are going for these days but the ECX coax from hertz sq wise is comparable if not better than the polk for sure and are around the 180 a set. The power rating is a little low at 75rms but they still sound very good and can achieve pretty decent volume levels. We like to use them on our lower budget packages.

Did you mean "HCX" coax from Hertz?

Will the JL Audio HX280 amp (bridged) work well with Hertz HCX165 speaker set? Will I need to purchase anything extra to make the speakers work in my 14 SGS? Will the stock speaker grilles work?

HCX 165s are a line that hertz discontinued. There are still a few sets floating around but not many. The ECX line and MPX line are the 2 coax speakers we use here at the shop. For the HCX because of the surround protrusion you will want to switch your stock grills out for thinner wire mesh ones to avoid damage to the speaker. Yes that setup will sound very good.

BT355 line leveler
Amp wiring kit
and new grills if you choose the HCX speakers(recommended for any of the speaker choices)

That is some of the other stuff you will need for the install. Please let me know if I can help you out further in any way.

Default Thin, metal mesh speaker grilles

Recommend any particular brands/part numbers for the grilles? Will the adjustable tweeter on the HCX 165 speakers interfere with the grille? I assume the HCX will mount directly into the speaker pods without any mods?

we use hogtunes wire mesh grills. The tweeter should not hit at all.

I can tell you on my bike when mounted outside the pods the tweeters were hitting the stock grills on my bike. I ended up mounting them inside the pods which took some grinding/ cutting on the pods themselves. With the hogtune grills you should be ok. My pair of hcx165's are listed for sale if you haven't bought any yet.

In line with Outkasts guidance, if u ever pull those damn pods, change the grills out to the Hog Tunes or Hawg Wired wire mesh grills. Just not enuff clearance with the HD non Boom grills.

When I did my 2015 Glide audio system, I couldn't justify spending more on bike audio than I would spend in the house, in my truck or in the car. I just wanted something I could hear at 80MPH.

All the guys in here are pretty much experts, so I'm in no position to disagree with them. But I kept my system simple;

Cerwin Vega B2 (predecessor to the B52)
Infinity Kappa 62.11
BT Line Leveler

I've got about $334 dollars in my setup not including wiring, fuse etc. It's not going to win any audio competitions and certainly won't satisfy the discerning tastes of an audiophile, but it is loud and clear enough to hear running down the highway at 80+.
