Exhaust Back Fire

Exhaust Back Fire
Hello. I recently installed a Mikuni HSR42mm carb on my 2000 FXDL. Every time I am hard in the gas and let off there is a lot of popping in the exhaust. If I crack the throttle just a bit while slowing down, the popping goes away and sounds great a decel. I have tried to adjust the pilot screw and it doesn't change. Do I start with the pilot jet or main jet to correct this?
Any and all opinions appreciated!
Thanks
Dave

Look for exhaust leaks at any joints. Also, what mufflers/exhaust system do you have?
I have cycle shacks on my dyna, they are short and pretty free flowing, and my bike does similar to what you describe. I have tuned my carb and the bike runs great.
I have read countless threads, articles, info, etc. My conclusion is the #1 cause is exhaust leaks allowing oxygen to mix with unburnt fuel in the exhaust system. Also check the throttle plate in the carb and make sure that is properly adjusted (closes when let off the throttle).
I have also read that stock mufflers/exhaust do it, but because of the packing and sound reduction in stock muffler, you just can't hear it.
I decided to leave mine alone and live with it. I may do something about it when and if I change mufflers or pipes, but for now, I am riding!

Many other articles on the subject. So if you think your tuned right, check for exhaust leaks. Then if it still does it, live with it. YD
