2014 FXDL 1k quart short and other questions.
Hello All,
Just did my 1k fluid changes. Only two quarts of oil drained out of bike. Would this be unusal. because I've been consistently checking the cold oil level which has been in the middle of dipstick.
Also. after pouring in the new oil am I checking for the cold temperature level or the hot temp level since the motor is usually still hot at this point.
Thx Greg in NJ

+1 on the shop manual, but your owner's manual tells you how to check the oil, it can be done both hot or cold.
Nothing to worry about, especially if you don't know how much oil was in there before you drained it. Usually the motor will take 2.5 quarts to get it to the correct level, about .5 quart won't drain out unless scavenged. There's also oil left in the filter, did you measure that too?

your actually only about one half quart down. I have never been able to get more than 2.5 quarts of oil in my streetbob at any oil change . You could have burned a half quart while the motor was breaking in. Its pretty common. I used a bit of oil during break in and so far I only get about 1/8th quart down in 2000 miles . So in reality you use virtually no oil if you break the bike in right. Check your oil level when the bike is on the side stand if that is what your owners manual tells you to do, and check it when the bike is hot.
