Default New 2014 FXDWG, 1600 mile trip home...

Title says it all. Any suggestions regarding break-in? I'm thinking stop after 1000 and drain oil. Plan to run synthetic, any reason NOT to switch then?

Any other suggestions welcomed. Not new to H-Ds, but first new bike for me.

I had a 2000 FXDX with big bore 95, CV carb, 2:1 pipe many years ago. Will the 2014 stock 103" performance be similar or disappointing by comparison? I'm fine with stock for now, but already planning for upgrades this winter, after 5k miles or so...

The last 7 new bikes I've got, I've changed to synthetic at 1000 miles.
No problems.
As long as you do your 'break-in' as listed in manual, you'll be fine.
I suggest, Mobil 1 20w50 V-Twin.

X 2 (everything except the 7 bikes part)

My indy and another indy recommended the same thing including the brand of oil.

CVO bikes come with syn from the factory.
I change to syn oil at the first oil change

"I haven't ridden one yet...what does a bone stock 103" perform like?"

It'll feel pretty familiar. Still has plenty of torque etc, but it will feel choked by all the anti-pollution anti-noise geegaws jammed into its orifices. It'll be horribly quiet.

It has an overdrive 6th gear, which is great on long rides. The power comes on and off instantly with any touch of the throttle (EFI) so that can take a little getting used to after a carbed dyna (more difficult to cruise smoothly, particualrly if you have apes and a rough road). But you'll get used to it quickly enough.

Goin from what you had done on the dx to this, you're probably not gonna be too happy with it stock. It's a decent motor, but like said before, it's choked up and definitely needs a few things to get it running like it should

As expected...so...I have until Friday, May 15th to complete the dealership mods needed for a fun ride home from Minneapolis to Seattle. Right now, they include a Sundowner seat for my 52yr old butt, a backrest and luggage rack, and some soft luggage.

Since the bike only has <10 miles on it, should I run it stock for a few thousand, or call them tomorrow and have an aftermarket 2:1 pipe installed and fatten up the mixture to allow for it?

1600 miles is a long ways to be underwhelmed...and it will probably be awhile before I get a chance to make another solo thrash like this again...next winter I could do cams/heads/ ??? whatever else it takes to fully unleash the beast.

My only gripe with the stock WG's is that dang air filter and how your leg might rub against it. THAT get's tiring after a few miles...let alone 1600. I could care less about the mufflers and all that stuff at first.
Personally I find it weird that Harley hasn't changed the air filter or moved the pegs out a little.
Rest of the bike is awesome, as is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Harleys use a direct drive transmission, meaning top gear is always a 1:1 ratio.
