Default Rear Shock Upgrade Help!

I have a 2006 FXDWG that has stock suspension front and rear on it. I am a big guy and ride frequently with my wife. Problem is I have adjusted the preload on the springs as far as I can but we still bottom out when we ride together.

I know I need some good heavy duty shocks/springs but what are the best ones to get and not break the bank?

I want to start with rear shocks and then would like to work on the front suspension after that.

Thanks in advance for your advice on this!!

Jeff

I haven't done it yet, so I can't give any honest feedback, but I'm thinking about Ricor's IAS shocks on the rear and the Intiminators in the front, once I have the cash laying around. I'm gonna go taller than stock.

I've heard lots of good things about Progressive, too. They've got a decently varied selection.

I have no experience with either of these shocks, but they are ones I have been looking at for a while. I don't know exactly what "break the bank" is to you, but these prices don't seem to bad if they are as good as people say thy are. Both of these can be ordered a little longer then stock at 12.5" or 13" and in a heavy duty version which from what Progressive had said means they are build for a heavy pay load.

Good luck with your search.

Progressive makes a number of different spring rates for their 412's and 444's. Check out Dennis Kirk, they seem to have the best selection of the different spring rates. 412's if you're on a budget, 444's if you really want to smooth out the back end. I'm 285 and ride 2 up a lot. I recently added heavy duty 444's and like them - the really smooth out the small stuff and they do dampen the big hits that used to bounce me off the seat.

Progressive makes a 412 HD that are a bit stiffer than the standard 412"s and are adjustable. When my 02 FXD was the primary two up rider it handle both of us quite well. Also put Progressive springs in up front with 10W oil in the forks.

Fuelmoto will set you up with a set of Ohlins entry level shocks (S36E I think) with springs made for your weight for about $580. I had a set on my old FXD and am only waiting for financial recovery to get a set on my new Low Rider. Amazing shocks. You can also get a set of Race Tech springs and cartridge emulators, again, sprung for your weight for $260 for the forks. Again, had those as well and again, will be buying for my Low Rider. Eventually...! Awsome suspension with the pair.

Default Ricor

I have the Ricor shocks, and their Intiminators at the front. I am very pleased with this set up. I also have True Track stabilizers installed which also helps the handling I think. I am not that big (175lbs) so my goal was more oriented towards the ride and handling, no bottoming problems with the stock set up, just wanted to get rid off that "wandery" feeling in the corners. I fully recommend the Ricor setup.

I put Progressive heavy duty fork springs in my SB and I love them. Brake dive is gone. Ride smooth also. They aren't a lot of $, and easy to install.
Rears I can't be of much help though.
