I think those are about all you get from good tires. If the rubber compound were made to last longer you would have to sacrefice traction.

Some folks say they are getting 10-12K out of the stock Dunlops. Don't know if it's the type of roads, temperatures, style of riding or what.
Maybe I'll figure it out in the next 100,000 miles or so.If I do, I'll certainly let you in on the secret.
Trotter says I don't get any mileage outa my rear tires, cause I ride like a maniac. I ride my bike like I stole it, on account I kinda did.

Materials for road building vary from region to region. It all depends in the type of aggregate that has natural developed in the region. Construction companies will use whatever aggregate material is produced in the area that passes compaction codes. The cheapest possible material is what's often used. Cost is reduced by buying from the closest supplier.
I'd imagine that the silica content in concrete and especially asphalt plays a big factor in tire life. I myself have noticed that asphalt roads down south have more visual "sparkle" in the sunlight.....probably due to higher silica content. It's probably the higher silica content....combined with increased road surface temperatures in certain regions that are cause for decreased tire life.

If anyone figures this out let us all know!! In the past few years I've run Avon, Metzlers, and Dunlops on my bikes and have lived in the New York area, Iowa and South Carolina. Hasn't made a difference living in cold weather, hot weather, different road construction, etc., the only tires I could get over 7000 miles out of were the OEM Dunlops. The Avons and the HD Screaming Eagle on my Dyna were the worst for wear and Metzlers were just marginally better. The pics below are of the rearMetzler tire just taken off my RoadKing after about 8000 - should have replaced it 1000 miles ago!! Running a square tire sure makes for interesting handling characteristics!
