Default Opinions on engine guards?

I'm thinking about getting engine guards or "crash bars" installed on my Low Rider? Does anybody have any ideas or warnings for me? Do they really work? KB[sm=feedback.gif]

This has been discussed a lot. I'm still trying to decide. Catch up on the discussions here:

As a "crash" bar I don't think it does much from what I've read. But I have them on my FXD and I have dropped it. It makes a world of difference in not having to replace broken mirrors, bent levers or scuffed up grips.

And one more thng that makes it worth every penny to me...

The bike doesn't drop all the way to the ground, so lifting it is sooo much easier.

they work if you drop you bike while parked or at a slow speed i guess.....better yet, don't drop your bike.
I don't think they suite the narrow lines of the dyna at all. jmho

I agree, it's a personal thing. Not for my Super Glide but thats how I see it.
If you think you'll like the way it looks, put em on.

I don't think Ive' ever seen a Dyna model with "crash" bars.I think you'll just take away from it's sleekness.I've seen less pronounced bars than H.D. But never on a Dyna

I ride a couch. (FLHTCUI) I came over a hill at about 20 clicks two halloweens ago, cars stopped ahead, sand on the road, hit the brakes, went down fast. Slid on the road, bike hit the car. Crash bars wrecked, plus grips, bag bars, levers, signals, boards, leather jacket, helmut, knee. I paid the car driver $300.00 to repair the bumper. Total bill, over $3,000.00

If I wouldn't have had crash bars it would have been a write off. I love them.

Your choice.

I think they look out of place on a Dyna. I've seen some guys recently do this to a Bob and it just doesn't fit for me. But, then again, neither does a seat other than a solo, a windshield, and saddlebags fit the ideal of the Bob. I do have a quick detach windshield now for long rides but I don't like it on the bike. I take it off as soon as I reach my destination. That's JMHO. To each their own. Ride what you like and accessorize to your pleasure.

Yeah..I really think it's a personal preference thing...for looks anyway. As far as the functionality, they definitely serve a purpose. I was considering them for my DWG...after thinking about it for weeks, and checking out many pictures of DWGs with engine guards, I decided against it. Although, I will admit...someone on this board posted a new Street Bob with them a few days/weeks? ago, and they looked pretty damn good. I would suggest just googling HD dynas and looking at as many pics as possible. Because ultimately, no matter how much something works (or doesn't work), if you don't like the way they look on your bike, you're gonna wish you didn't spend the money on them.
Good luck buddy.

Here's a link to mine with the bars on it (the pic is big and I don't wanna stretch the page). I agree that it affects the looks. I was planning to take mine off... til I dropped it. I'll choose to look goofy for a while...lol!
