Glad I found this thread...my nephew needs one and I found it on the local craigs list for 120. He wouldn't buy a detachable cause he hates the hardware left behind. He actually hates backrest all together but his fiance is complaining so we know who will win.
Perfect for his senerio.
Are they universal for all years? He has a 2007 dyna FXD.

It should fit: "DYNA / SPORTSTER MODELS 4" x 6" Pad For Seats 2.5" Tall Fits 1986 - 2003 Harley Davidson Sportster Models and Fits 1991 - Present Harley Davidson Dyna Models "NOTE - THIS BACKREST WILL NOT WORK PRE 2006 WIDE GLIDE & WITH THE STOCK SEAT ON A FAT BOB, THE FAT BOB REQUIRES ANY OTHER FXD SEAT THAN THE STOCK ONE DUE TO THE REAR MOUNT SET-UP ON THE STOCK SEAT" Fits 2002 Indian Scout" taken from their website.
Mines been sitting in my storage unit for a while now. Haven't made up my mind if I should sell it or not.
Will it fit his 2007 FXD with the stock seat and stock passenger pavillion?
The seller also told me that the passenger can't really lean back on it. Is that because of the angle of it? If it was tested for 600 lbs. I would think it was strong enough.

Probably because of the height. It will sit somewhere at the lower back I'm sure.
I run a low HD sissy and my girl doesn't lean on it...more or less just for safety.
If she is going to be leaning on it then you should have him look at the mid size sissy bar. IMO
