Do I need a spring compressor to install a heavy duty clutch spring? I am experiencing a bit of slippage in 5th gear since my big bore install. If I whack the throttle in 5th gear it will slip.

This was never an issue before the big bore build and only happens in 5th gear which is my top gear. No one here (at work) seems to know if I will need a clutch spring compressor or not for this install so I am sure someone here knows.

I am going to pull the clutch apart and check my steel rings as our tech has described and if they are burned I will replace the rings and the clutch plates. He said if they are not I should be fine. I am not hard on my clutch and my other bike has 75K miles on the stock clutch.

Anyway, a yes you need the spring compressor or no you do not would be great. My service manual is at home and yes, I am here at work.

 

No. Its just 6 bolt and I think it can be done through the derby cover. See the retaining/alignment ring with the 6 bolts. Remove the bolts and tat ring then the clutch spring under it. Easy.

 

No ............... i didnt and it wont fit thru the derby hole..

nope its easy but you have to pull the outer primary off.....remove the 6 bolts and remove spring. just make sure you do it on a jack and not on its kick stand i had a hell of a time fighting with my clutch basket as it all wanted to fall out....

 

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think I could do it through the derby cover. The question now is if I need new clutch plates and steel rings. Gonna have to tear her down and see what the gods have in store for me.

 

nope not at all i used the barnette spring i liked it better than the HD one but it was a pretty easy once the primary was off

 

If you don't want a heavy pull but still want a good lockup, try adding a VPC clutch

 

Quick and Easy job with primary cover off. I used the Screamin Eagle spring and found that the clutch effort was manageable and the clutch gripped better when put to work. In my opinion the Screamin Eagle spring should have came in the bike when stock, because the stock spring was way to light for even slight mods on the engine.

I should also note that I install heavy duty clutch springs in every bike I have ever built, be it an atv, dirt bike, harley etc..
