Default Piggyback

I notice a common theme in the threads about piggyback timers is always mentioning about them failing.
Is this a common problem?
Do they have a life expectancy?
Thanks in advance.

my tuner is a PC-V retro fit (on a shelf). It only fits '08 s and '09 s. Basically they are good until you drop them or crack them somehow. The pc-V's plug takes on water sometimes, but all you have to do is unplug it and shake out the water and your good to go. I have a power vision now which does not piggyback.
