Default Thinking about saving for a set of Woods TW-222 or TW-777 cams. Questions

Hi guys. So Ive searched a few threads on here and decided that Id like to go with a set of cams as my main engine modification. Id prefer not to mess with the main internals like pistons, rings, compression ratio etc for now. Im looking for an increase in streetable torque with good ridability and decent MPG while cruising on the freeway.

After reading the descriptions of the cams, the grind Im most interested in is either the Woods TW-222 or, if it works for the RPM range I want my torque in, the TW-777. Also, would be a great time to upgrade the inner cam bearings to something more durable for the long run.

Do any of my fellow Dyna riders have the 777 installed? if so how do you like them?

Do you have to upgrade to hydraulic roller lifters for this cam or will the factory lifters be suitable?

What engine do you have? The tw222 is what I have and love it. I believe the tw777 needs a higher compression than what my 96 has. Maybe a good middle ground for you would be the tw555 there are a few guys with this cam around here but have not heard to many with the 777. Fuel moto would be a great place to call with your questions and you could explain your riding style which will determine what cam would be best. Another thing to consider is are you going to take the engine any further than cams? If so do you want to buy cams again? Good luck

I honestly dont think Id be doing any other engine mods. My FatBob has the 103 in it and she is fairly zippy. 103 is also plenty big for me. Im just wanting more torque across the power band. I figure if i decide to do head work or upgrade pistons etc, Ill be doing it to go race only. My fatty is my everyday all weather street figter.

Kinda like, I want to twist the throttle in any gear in any part of the of the rpm range i typically use (idle to ~4500) and have no doubt that gobs or torque are on tap. Of course Id love to have good power past 4500 to redline as well.

555 would be my suggestion based on your above post.

The 222 is a nice cam, but like my SE255's they are good for low-end and mid-range torque. which means it will pull hard to about 4200 to 4500 rpm and then the ***** just fall off there. Now i'm not saying you won't get a real kick out of them no matter how high you hold the rpm's so if lower to mid is what your looking for I say do it. Don't ask your local dealer what he thinks because if he's a dick he'll say something like " that will void you warranty sir". I'm trying to find out if 555's or 777's will be good for my ride as is with the flat top SE pistons or if I need to have higher compression for them. Either way i'm taking it to Scott Palmer @ hillside later this year so I will be able to join the 100+ crowd!

I am on an SG, not a Dyna, but I love my 777's ... I am running a SCR of 10.6-10.7 though. For your application, I would definitely call Bobby Wood directly and ask his opinion ... I am pretty certain the 777's would not work for you and the 222's or 555's would be a better choice if you are wanting to stick with Wood Performance cams. I followed his personal recommendation and couldn't be happier ... 777's with a 32T to 30T pulley swap with my 107" build!

After your second post 222 or 555. 222 is going to be more low to mid 555 is going to be lowmid to higher. My 222 pulls real hard thru 4500 and then starts to drop off with peak tq at 3800rpm here is a thread of mine that includes my recent dyno results with the 222. I have a 96 so your would be slightly higher and also depend on your other mods such as exhaust.

WG2011 thats a very nice looking dyno sheet! Still had some nice power up to 5000. Thinking I will have to call in and talk to either fuel moto or Mr Wood.

Broken Wing, ill have to search the 555. Sounds like it could be what Im looking for!

Just a thought, I too want to put some cams in someday, but I think that I am going for the Andrews 30 T mod first. It should give you a lot of what you are wanting but cost less, should be easier to do yourself. I just think it is a nice progression to do the 30T, then cams.

Andrews 48H is a very good cam. Very good lown and will make power past 5000 rpm if you want.
