Default Removing rust from engine components?

My engine's apart, and I've noticed grime/rust on some of the internal components, like the rocker arms...I've read many tutorials on this forum, as well as engine rebuild threads, and the parts that they show on their pics are not nearly as worn-out looking as mine are...

What is a good, safe method for cleaning the engine internals before putting it back together? Thanks!

I've always used Kroil and the softest brush that will do the job, never tried it on engine internals though.

plain brake cleaner will also do. blast away the rust and dry the parts with compressed air!
