Default Opinions on Oil Coolers?

warm here today, noticed 2003 wide glide was running 239 degrees on the interstate, cruzing 75-80. seems hot,

was curious what temp you guys run and if you think oil coolers have any benefits and are worth the money? seems like there are lots of options for all kinds of prices.

running synthetic & lucas additive should help too right?

From what I've read, traditional oils have increased breakdown above 240F. Synthetic oils are much more resistent to breakdown at higher temps. So running synthetic makes good sense to me. There are folks who don't agree with this however, having run dino oil trouble-free for many years.

Honestly 239F doesn't seem that hot to me... more like a normal operating temp in a hot climate. If I was running 240F and had synthetic in the engine, I don't think I'd worry about running an oil cooler. My stock TC96 was getting as hot as 270F when climbing hills in 100F+ summer heat. By adding an oil cooler, fuel tuner & syn oil, I've gotten it down to 230-240F as a normal summer operating temp, which I'm good with.

How do you monitor the temperature?

There's already one fitted.

Before I'd consider an oil cooler I'd do a proper job of tuning for lower temp. It will tackle the heat at the source. Remember the hottest bit of the bike is the heads where there is little/no oil cooling.

There is really no down side to running an oil cooler, in fact it make's sense at least to me to have one installed.........

I am running the Jagg 10 row low mount on my 2013 FXDF and it has lowered oil temp's by minimum 20 plus degree's, also running Lucas V-Twin 50w oil as well in the summer....

I do agree that a good tuner and proper tune are a must for the proper combustion chamber temp's.........

If you couple these together for lower all around decrease in engine temp's your engine will be very happy and should treat you well..........
