Default rear axle issue

Gotta change my rear tire and dealer found that axle is seized(07 FXDWG w/spoke rims). Stopped mechanic before he beat axle out with steel mallet. Ordered/recieved new axle and bearings, now want to do it myself(no confidence in dealership mech). What would be reason for axle seize? Should i use stationers on the swing arm extensions to prevent movement during axle removal? What bearing grease would be recommended?

Had anyone found an online source for the Michelin Scorcher 31 used on the front? 80/90 17"

Most likely the axle didn't have a little coating of grease on it when put back in last time and it is stuck on the bearings. A little hammering should free it up. Your bearings should be greased from the OEM since they are sealed. I suppose you can pick the shields out and put some high quality grease in there but you risk damaging the seals if you do.

That does happen from time to time. Just get a brass drift and drive it out, but that can damage the bearings. The bearings are greased and sealed from the bearing manufacturer so you need to follow the manual or let a shop replace them if needed. Use anti seize on the axle when putting it back ( not on the threads ).A light even coat is all you need ( a little goes a long way ).

I guess this ancient debate continues to this day. I will file it next to the oil debate and the tire debate, just before the primary lube debate...
