How to find out what kind of cam you got?

Since Big Dog has gone to that great custom motorcycle burial ground, call S&S and get it from the horse's mouth. Also ask about what lift the heads will accommodate before buying cams with .600" lift.

You may be able to pull the cam cover and look for any markings on the end of the cams? If the motor is out, that would be an easy thing to do. Also, I wouldn't just arbitrarily change to .600 either without knowing more about your heads and CR, etc.

the marking would be on the bearing side (Inner),if you don't want to pull the cam cover & check.pull a p/rod,get the lifter on the base of that lobe and with a indicator, check the lift.take what ever you come up with & multiply it by 1.625,you`ll have your cam lift.now this still wont tell you what is the max the heads are set up for.since your wanting to go with a bigger cam, your going to need more compression too (big dogs were way down on that too),your better off just pulling it apart, seeing what you've got and plan a build

Cam readings
Isn't there a way to put a degree wheel on the crank to see when the dial indicator shows the opening and closing of both the intake and exhaust in degrees to make it easier to match cams. I mean you would have Lift and be able to calculate duration and overlap by the opening and closing points in degrees and along with doing a ccp one should be able to match spec's, wouldn't they?
