Is a cam the last thing you wanna do?

The best thing for you to do would be to determine exactly what you want to accomplish "in the end" and select specific components to get you there or ideally finish up your package at one time.

Honestly, a cam that may work best with what you have now would not be the best cam for a complete "package".

THere are many good options for bolt-in cams. Some can be used in bigger builds, some "should" not be used in bigger builds.

While the stock bee-hive style springs that come on the later model heads will handle lifts up to approx .575", "I" would never use them with anything more than maybe .550" for any lentgh of time. They do not have adequste seat pressure and they can break with the higher lift grinds.

Possible candidates might include:
HQ-500, Andrews 26H, R&R525, Woods 6-6, Andrews 54H.Of those, the Andrews 26 is the only one I would not use with headwork and increased compression. There are, of course other.

There are a ton of factors that come into play. There is no "this is the magic cam" solution. THere is simply more to it than that. Anyone that tells you otherwise is yank'n your chain.

Do your homework THOROUGHLY, or you WILL end up buying cams more than once.

The Woods 6-6, Hillside Cycle stage 2 or 3 heads, set at 10-1CR............making great numbers with flat torque curves.

Give Scott a call at www.hillsidecycle.com and ask him about this combo in a 103".

Picking a set of cams isn't as much about the money as it is to achieve purpose. The right grind can work in your existing motor, and a motor with better heads if that's planned for down the road, but selecting that cam takes good planning of your next step and calculating your next move ahead of time. Pick the right cam, and you'll have tons of power and torque where you need it, pick the wrong set and it will fall flat on it's face. With that being said, you should also consider your riding habits. Are you 1 up, 2 up, loaded or dry, city or highway and what riding habits do you have? This will give a guy half an idea where to start. A mild grind in the 500-525" might give you decent grunt down low, but not enough top end power to get what you need at speed, a medium grind in the 540-575" range will give you better mid range, but might lack low down, and higher lift cams from 585-640" (and above for big inchperformance builds) will drive excellent top end power from about 3000 rpm and up. You also have to calculate your compression, head/exhaust flow and duration to arrive with the right fit. To be honest, your best to talk with a reputable builder to help determine your needs if your not really up to speed on engines. They'll help educate you a bit while determining your riding requirements.

Somebody posted a great link on here a couple months ago that explained Stage 1 through Stage 4 and from what I read, it was an excellent thread to explain to someone when and why to upgrade and what was achieved with each stage and well as how different upgrades complimentedone another. I thought it was named Stage 1,2,3,4 for idiots or Stage explained or something like that. Anyone have that link cause it's in touring and it was an awesome read for someone considering upgrades. Just searched but couldn't find it, and it is in the touring section from about 2-3 months back?

OK found the link. Here's a really good read for someone embarking upon a build, cam upgrades and all of the requirements to upgrade an engine. Take a good look and read through this. It'll help prepare you talk to dealers and builders about the builds and what's in them.

http://www.american-v.co.uk/technical/tuning/staging/body.html

Isn't perfect but the guy that wrote this did a really nice job of expalining the principles.

FWIW, I ran S&S 585's in my 107" and they worked great, but I had some great aftermarket heads, 10.5:1 compression and a hot pipe with a tuner. What else do you have or is it just a plain 103 without heads?
