Is it possible even if its totally worn out for the comp sprocket to jump over the top of the ramps , I'm at a loss only occasionally when i take off it feels like there is a slip then a clunk , only 1st gear when i start off and mostly when cold . no weird noises runs and shifts great , like i said at a loss

new belt , good pulleys by visual inspection

 

My 88' Anniversary FLHTC did exactly the same thing. Never found out what it was before I gave it back to my Nephew. Now you got me curious.

 

After having my primary apart awhile back, it's kinda hard to imagine it could.
With what you have said the primary would be my first if not 2nd suspect.
You mentioned new belt and good pulleys.
Do you ever notice the noise when shutting the bike off?

No noise or clunking , it shuts off fine -- what stumps me is when it dosen't do it , its a prefect starting , running , shifting bike . Oils were clean in both primary and transmission no sign of metal in the oil or on the magnetic plug .
When it dose do it its very harsh - it slips then clunks hard then is fine ?

It's possible but in worst case scenarios. You would have to look at the condition of the ramps on the comp. if they are getting chewed up them it might be. My money is on your clutch slipping though. Have you had any motor work done? Like heads, cam, etcetera.

 

Stock as can be . If it was slipping I don't get why I would get such a clunk when it grabs it's very instentainious

Chain tension is good ??? Tensioner come loose on you maybe ??? Doesn't sound like clutch slipping to me. Check that then the comp...

 

You changed the belt check the tension maybe to loose

 

Mine would do this every now and then. I found my compensator loose? Bad lochtite or what. Then I'd still get random clunking. I found rotating primary chain one spot was a lot looser than other areas. I know check tension rotating it all the way around. It has been much quieter since then.

 

Haydon M6 tensioner , through the cover it appears to be ok , will pull the primary next weekend when i have the gaskets , this is my only transportation so fingers crossed on loose comp
