Crane Fireball Hi-4E Ign. Ditch the VOES ?
Im running a Crane Hi-4E ignition with the VOES vacuum line blocked. It juts runs better at light throttle for some reason that way. I had a bad surge in 2nd, 3rd gear under light throttle and was advised to block the voes. It worked but my rear plug is fouling with black soot. I dont know if this is the cause or not. I have the Crane setup in single fire with a Crane coil. Should I re-connect the voes and look for another solution for the surging? Will adjusting the Crane help? Right now, I have the advance slope set to 5 and the rear cylinder set to zero.

I haven't had an pinging issues with the voes disconnected but it sure surges like crazy when it is connected. I cant understand why either. I even tried richening the mixture but that didn't help. I dont have a mighti-vac to know where my voes is adjusted but, it does hold vacuum. A local Harley tech that's really good with Evo's recommended that I try disconnected the voes.

I have no idea. I don't even know how to check the timing. I'm more of a wrench-turner.
I just set the advance slope to 5 and the rear cylinder offset to zero per the instructions that came with the Crane. I do see that there is a switch that has a "race mode" or "OEM with voes". I never have played with that switch. I have it is set to "OEM w/voes".

Have your local guy who's really good with Harleys check the timing. Too much advance can make it surge. The VOES brings the advance in sooner under lighter throttle/higher vacuum. Running without VOES, and setting the ign to the faster curves is okay unless you get into some hills and find it pinging. Slower curve and no VOES can cause plug fouling and make it doggier at part throttle, less mpg. Depending on your compression and cam.

Yes it is. Here is the info with pictures of it.

It has a "Race" or "OEM w./voes" switch but Ive never switched it to Race. I assumed it would only make my fuel mileage worse.
