Default starter would not disengage

Went for a late night ride last night and when I started the bike the starter would not disengage. turned off the key and it was still turning over . tapped the solenoid to get it to quit and had to push start the bike to get it home. It melted the battery terminal. I will buy a new battery tomorrow and solenoid but should I be looking for anything else? Thanks 1989 fxr with a elbruto 113 and a ultima starter. the solenoid is separate from the starter.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Obviously once you take it apart inspect all the pieces for any ptoblems, don't forget to look at the ring gear. More than likely the solenoid contacts "welded" themselves together. Do you have "heavy duty" cables????

Ya when I put the new engine in I replaced all the cables at the same time. I have to work to day so I am hoping to get the parts sent to me while at work. Just don't have time to take it apart until I get home so hopefully I done get a surprise when I do. thanks

This happened to me, I was able to pull apart the solinoid and clean it up an grease the pin that slides. I would check the jackshaft also.

It could also have been caused by a bad relay.

I would say bad solenoid. there's no power to the relay with the key off . but always power to the solenoid. You started it up and it stuck on couldnt hear it over the bike . better check the starter and ring gear too

Check the wiring diagram, on some models there is always power to the relay.

Sent the starter to the reman shop it needs new brushes they burned . The spring in the solenoid broke and it had no push back. The poor contact stuck the disk to the contacts and overheated the wiring ends. I am replacing the battery cables to because I don't need a voltage drop. It take all the power I have to crank that 113 Ultima .

Yes i use the compression releases, but the battery box on the fxr will not take a large battery so I can only fit a 300cca. It will stop on compression stroke if i don't push the compression release, the starter needs the time to spin up then it can crank over no problem.
