S&S Power Duals-02 Ultra Classic--ground clearance
Bought this last summer. Previous owner put lots of chrome but no performance upgrades for the 88 that is about to hit 35k miles. Ride two-up on hilly, sometimes bumpy, always twisty roads, and stay in the 0-60mph zone 90% of the time.
Time to give it some more get up and go!!(Doing it in phases)
I'm not looking at internal mods just yet. Hoping to get a big boost with the external mods.
Just order Fuel Moto big sucker intake, Jackpot 4.5 slip-ons, and PCV. Everything I've read stated these upgrades are a good place to start.
Now to the ground clearance??
I'm thinking about S&S Power Duals for my next upgrade.
I have a big concern about ground clearance.
From what I can tell, these (or any other aftermarket for my 2002) don't have a flattened crossover like the newer models have.
Bike has the factory air shocks.
Wife and I add 400lbs to the equation.
Would like to hear from anyone that uses (or knows of bikes) with these types of lower crossovers.
Any issues with bottoming out or scraping in turns?
Anything else that I should be concerned about?
Thanks

We have installed at least a dozen of those headers on bikes with the old frame and have not heard any complaints about ground clearance and scraping. The pipe runs so close to the frame and is right in front of the rear tire, you would have to drop the rear wheel in a big hole to catch the pipe. As far as turning you will catch your floorboards way before you catch the headers...

I recently installed RCX Power Max headers. They have the same "stacked" pipe configuration as the S&S Power Duals and other headers. The cross under pipe is also not flattened. They look and sound great.
However, last night I noticed that my lower pipe heat shield is scraped on the bottom. I've recently done some parking lot practice on tight u-turns and thought I was getting floor board scraping on tight right turns. I never dropped the bike, so apparently the scraping was the lower pipe (front cylinder) heat shield dragging the ground.
The cross under pipe was fine, just long scrapes along the bottom of the bottom pipe heat shield.
