Default Sputtering after fuel stop.

On a long road trip I stopped at a gas station to refuel the bike and defuel myself. I wanted to get every ounce of fuel in the tank that I could. So I topped it off until absolutly no more could be put in. I started the bike and after about hundred feet the bike started sputtering and kicking. I pulled over and jockied the throttle, it cleared out. I started going again and it started sputtering again. I pulled over once more, did the same thing and it cleared out. I took off down the on ramp and after a quarter mile or so it cleared out and ran fine the rest of the trip. The only thing different at that stop was how much fuel I put in the tank. I never filled it that full again and it has never happened again. Any idea what filling the tank would do to cause this reaction?[sm=dontgetit.gif]

Seen it happen to a couple of club brothers on their Deuces I believe. It has something todo with the tank venting system I think. Kinda like creates a vaccum lock.

Homer is right on. If you overfill the tank you block the vent and it creates a lock. Also, my parners bike will do that same thing on ocassion. It happens if we've been running at fairly high speed in hot weather and make relatively short fuel stop. I think it's a lillte vaporlock thing generated by an engine on thats on the hot side.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like that is the problem. I was riding fairly high speed and it was hot, hot, hot![8D]It has never happened again, and I don't think you gain any signifcant mileage by over filling the tank.

My Ultra is only supose to hold 5 gallons but I have got 5.1/2 gallons in it.
That is a pretty good increase in milage

Thats a good increase if the bike will run, but it doesnt do much good if your on the side of the road which is what my bike tried to do to me. I would be interested in draining the tank and see exactly how much fuel it will hold.
