HELP! Question about starter motor replace
I have a question about a 2007 Road King starter motor replacement. My bike is at the dealer and they are going to install a new starter motor motor part number 31618-06A and also a starter clutch kit part number 31633-07A.
Doesn't a new starter motor come with a starter clutch on it? Why would I add a clutch kit to a new starter motor?
Thank you
Feroce

There's a great service at Ronnies Harley Davidson website OEM parts finder ... shows exploded diagrams and if you add to cart and look at the cart you can see the part numbers ... this is especially useful if you don't have a parts manual (which you can buy) .... The link is http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....m_oem/hdmc.asp ...
In the diagram for Electrical - Starter Assembly for 2007 FLHR Road King, item 22 is the starter assembly, black list retail price $375, item 23 clutch subassembly lists for #113 ....
[Numbering of the diagram doesn't correspond well with the parts table ...]
Component parts are also available separately ... could be that your starter could be repaired or that either the clutch or starter motor could be repaired ....
So, you're paying ~$475 + tax and labor ... hope they don't charge you too much for labor ... there are three bolts holding the starter to your bike plus the battery leads and starter wire ... has taken me about 10 minutes to remove ....
There are some good aftermarket replacements in Custom Chrome or Drag Specialties Fat Book ... that could be had for less ... just as good or better .....

That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard! A starter clutch is like 40% of the whole starter assembly! Why in God's name wouldn't it come with it? Every starter I have ever changed has come complete, all I ever have to do is drop it in place and bolt it up. Maybe they are looking up the wrong p/n?
