Could be 1) jackshaft problem 2) solenoid problem 3) starter clutch problem. I went through the same thing this summer when you hit the starter, the motor spins, but the starter clutch would not engage the gear on the clutch basket and turn the motor over. As it turned out the starter clutch took a dump and when the starter was taken apart, the windings inside the starter motor were in the process of going south also.

Since you have to pull the primary off to remove the starter motor and do a fluid change when you put the starter back in, it is a good time to have the starter motor looked at also. All I'm saying is that to do it twice is a pain. It might be a good time to consider upgrading the stock starter so you don't have to pull it all over again a couple of months from now.

It sounds like the starter clutch I replaced one on my 2001 Wide Glide a few weeks ago. If you do it yourself DON'T FORGET THE BALL BEARING!!!!!! [sm=icon_rtfm.gif] There is a single ball bearing inside of the jack shaft make sure you take it out of your old one and put it in your new one, It doesn't come with it. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

How do you check the starter clitch before replacement?

It's one of those things that when it goes, you just sort of know. To get the starter off, you have to remove the primary, unbolt the jackshaft from the left side of the bike and then unbolt the starter from the right side. If you're going through all of that trouble, replacing a starter clutch or the entire starter is pretty easy. Even if it turns out to be something else. I'd consider spending a few extra bucks ($50.00 or so) and replacing the clutch when it is apart anyway.

Check your service manual, there is an easier way to check the solenoid w/o removing the entire starter I think. Usually though, if it is the solenoid, you'll get a clicking sound and the starter won't spin at all, so that's one way to eliminate that part. If the starter spins but doen't engage, it's likely the clutch which have a habit of going.

What Surfit said!! Aside from the initial bike purchase, it's the best investment you'll ever make. Don't waste your money on anything but the HD manual.
