Default clunk when shifting to first gear

I just acquired a 2002 Fatboy, and I notice when cold the bike makes a loud clunk when shifting into first gear from neutral. Is this something to do with any adjustment or is this normal ?
Does not seem to clunk once warmed up.

thanks johnv

It's the compensator with thicker cold oil, and it's normal.

This is not your first Harley?
Try pumping the clutch a few times before you start the bike. This seems (to me) make the clunk a lot less "clunky ". Its normal. 51 posts in 6 years?

After you pull in on the clutch try blipping the throttle prior to shirting to break the stiction between the clutch plates.

It's normal. I do find however when Im using synthetic gear lube it's quite a bit quieter.

Try pulling in the clutch 15 or so seconds before putting in in first . It is normal for it to clunk tho .

I try not to shirt on my bike . .. but sometimes, I can't get home fast enough . . .

I don't usually get so worked up over the "fluids in the holes" discussions, but I have noticed that things are a bit less clunky with Belray in my tranny.
