Default Open AC + Rain = How Often Do You Re-oil??

I run a DK Customs open air cleaner and got caught in a nasty storm last week, (Weather people, you suck!).

Bike ran pretty good through it as we only had about 10 miles to go, and I know my AC took on some water. I didn't have a rain sock, but I have one now that I will be carrying with me if there is even a HINT of rain coming.

I've read some of the older posts regarding this and most say the issues are minimal, but I didn't see any that talk about re oiling their air filter.

This is the first storm I got caught in, in years. Would one storm be enough water to negate the effect of the oil on the filter?

Should they be re coated every time it gets wet?

Would I be ok after one storm and maybe wait to re spray it until it happens a few times?

Thanks all.

I have a Screaming Eagle AC but I always have a rain sock on it and have never had any trouble riding in the rain.

As for oiling it, I cleaned and oiled it at 20k, just to do it. I read somewhere, you don't have to clean/oil it every 100k miles, which seems like a lot, so when I hit 50k, I'll do it again.

I always redid the filter element in my truck every 20k. For a bike, I was planning on doing the same. Just a rinse and a light spray on the outside of the filter.

But under the circumstance of being caught in a hard rain where I know the filter caught a lot of H2O, I was just thinking that I may respray it due to the water maybe thinning out the capabilities of the oil.

Should be cleaned and oiled every 5K. Kit can be had at most auto parts stores cheaper than at HD. The rain sock is a joke and pretty much worthless but I have never oiled it. Seems it would further restrict air flow.

Thank you for saying it. I've been in freakin biblical downpoars and hours-long steady rains and I've never had a problem. If you look down at the thing while its raining, its really surprising how little water actually hits it, especially if you're moving.

I've never had a rain sock and never had a problem. I clean and oil my filter every few K, never a problem.

I meant oiling the filter, not the sock. There should be no reason to oil it.

Like you said, it would restrict more air flow.

I just looked at my K&N instructions..is says to clean it every 50k miles.

As for the rain sock, it's called that for a reason...to stop rain from getting to the AC. Use it or don't. I know I will.

Whatever. It's a hideous garter belt. Not necessary

The instructions that came with my screaming eagle air cleaner say not to oil the element.
