Registration for 2009 Nightster licensed in VA
I just purchased an 09 Nightster from another service member. He didn't enclose that the bike was last registered in 2013 in VA. I thought it was all good to go. I don't have the title yet, though i want to get it registered in CA. The bike has an aftermarket shorty straight pipes without the O2 sensors.
What do I need to do to get it street legal in CA besides insurance and title?

as a service member, you have 2 options: register it in California, or register it in your home state. the fact that the po had it registered in va is irrelevant.
call your local dmv if you want to register it in ca. and see what they require. here, in Louisiana, just have to have ins, title, and either pay taxes, or prove that you already paid taxes. when I was military, I registered plenty of vehicles out of my home state of fl. when I lived in Colorado, you had to have emissions done, so, I registered my vw in fl through the mail (it wouldn't pass, nowhere near stock). other states, didn't have such stringent requirements so I did them locally.

Welcome from Hayward.
When I went down to register mine they said it needed 7500 mile on it, I told them the bike was originally from Ca. and the owner bought it new and registered it in Montana so mileage for me wasn't an issue. They did want to verify the vehicle ID # and had to pay the sales tax.

Thanks for the DMV link. I read that motorcycles are exempt from smog checks.
