Default Can I Repair Damaged Black Ceramic Coated Heat Shields (Vance and Hines)?

Hello all!

I am new here and I am looking for some words of wisdom. I have a 2014 Sportster 48 which I recently laid down at a low speed which unfortunately caused some damage to the black ceramic coated heat shields on my Vance and Hines Big Radius 2-2 exhaust.

I called Vance and Hines and to replace both heat shields will run me about $480 shipped and will take 4-6 weeks.

The gouges are quite deep and there is a dent in the front heat shield under the bend. Can these be repaired? Or should I start saving my money to purchase new?

Thanks for your help!

To cheap out, take them off and paint them flat black until you can save for new ones... or, my choice, have them powder coated.

My coater did mine for less than $50 in high heat satin.

Tape off the damaged area and hit it with an flat black high heat engine paint, cost effective rather than pulling them. Ask yourself is it a show bike?

That would be my choice. Take them off, sand out the scratches, ignore the little dent. $55 problem solved.

The high heat engine paint will not look great on a piece that big and prominent, IMO.

BBQ grill paint may also do good for touchup paint.

Wanted to add: you should do as I suggested until you're able to pull them. It'll seal and protect against the rust setting in.

thinking I'd do one of the above...
IMO any flaw in the paint or pipes just adds character to a bike,-- unless as said above..

If its a show bike then opt for the new stuff and wait till you put another ding or scratch on/in your daily rider.

$480 just for the shields? I paid 7 and change for the complete system on my Road Glide. I would do something to prevent rust and wrap them.

Yeah the prices are quite steep. For the complete set new was between $600-$700. I thought about wrapping them although the location of the exhaust mounts and the shape of the pipes themselves would cause for an interesting wrap job. I tried looking for pictures of these wrapped and couldn't find any. Maybe that's a hint. Lol
