Default Gas Reserve

Well I found out just how far the bike goes on a tank of gas. I also found out that the reserve on my petcock does not work. On the way home from work the bike sputtered a bit. Well, knowing that it was just about time for fuel I turned the petcock to the reserve position and proceded on my way towards the pumps. About 30 seconds later it just shut down, nothing. It was if I had been riding in the reserve position all along. Luckily I was only about 5 miles from the house and the most wonderful woman in the world(that's my wife) came to my rescue. She brought me some gas to get back home. Now I just have to figure this reserve thing out.

You might be riding on reserve, look closely at the petcock.

Down position should be the regular fuel tank. Turned up position should be reserve.

Buy yourself an Ultra, they don't have the reserve feature.

I ran out of gas Sunday. First time in my life. First time not having a petcock. I had given up on the light and the guage, and just used the odo. This was ok until I started riding streets instead of freeway. I dropped 25 miles less per tank. Ran out on a hill to the gas station. A guy helped me push it to the station. So uncool. Also uncool was this metric guy filling up and just looking.

I have seen this before and a friend of mine back home a harley mechanic took and repalced the petcock after that it worked fine. Seems that the old one had trash inside the petcock not allowing fuel to flow in reserve

I remember my 1991 883 with the 2.2 tank. Reserve was good for only 8 miles! Used to scare the crap out of me riding in remote areas.
