Default Sears tap and die sets, difference in metals?

I need to fix the threads on one of the bolt holes that hold the passenger floorboards to the frame.

When going to Sears, Craftsman sells two different types of "black box" (seems to be the higher end then red box stuff) Craftsman tap die sets in the stores. One is TT_CarbonSteel and the other is just Carbon Steel. Anyone know the difference? The TT_CarbonSteel sets are twice the price.

Assume it would be harder metal. Sears seems the only one using that designation so not really positive. If you only need to fix one hole you could just buy one tap from Home Depot. Of course with a set you'll be ready for next time you need one....

If you are building you a tool set then get the best you can afford, if you just want to fix one hole then go to a hardware store and buy one tap.

When was the last time you needed a tap? Ever?

If not then just buy the one tap and call it a day. If you feel you will need them in the future or just like to have a full set just in case, then buy the set.

Keep in mind they also have thread chasers too. I use them to clean up cross threaded bolts and nuts. Tap and die sets are used to cut threads rather than repair them.

Sears red box stuff is all china import, the tap's & dies will chase threads and cut new in mild thinner steel, ok for the average homeowner to use once every 2 years maybe but don't try to work any hard bolts or materials. If you plan on really using them pay the extra.

The higher prices taps have tungsten in them to keep them sharp.

Starrett and Hanson used to be the best. I still have a tool box drawer full from my industrial days.

Use a good tapping fluid. Tap Magic is good. Castrol makes a moly dee. In a pinch wd-40 or liquid wrench

Heat is the destroyer of taps and dies. The fluid cools and lubricates.

Find an industrial supply store and buy high speed steel taps. Carbon steal taps will disappoint you.
